For workflow automation on the Apple Macintosh platform we use AppleScript. This technology has been around for many years but with the advent of Mac OS X it has become ever more powerful.
To make FileMaker Pro data available via a web interface, we use Lasso - a web application development environment. We've been using Lasso since version 2 and have seen it go from strength to strength. While not as well known as some web application development tools, it has a rich feature set. As of version 5, Lasso also supports many SQL databases via native connectors, ODBC or JDBC drivers.
